Nationally, prices for composite bonding in the UK generally sit somewhere between £150 and £500 per tooth, depending on how much work each tooth needs, so our fee sits in that middle range. A small chip repaired at the edge of a tooth still takes real time and skill to blend in properly, and £299 reflects that. We'd rather give you a clear, upfront figure here than a vague range, and we can confirm the exact plan and cost for your teeth at consultation.
How much would a full smile makeover cost?
At £299 per tooth, a 6-tooth smile makeover works out at around £1,794, and a 10-tooth case at around £2,990. We'll always give you a written quote before we start, based on exactly how many teeth we're treating, so there are no surprises partway through.
What actually happens during the appointment?
We start with a proper look at your teeth and a conversation about what you'd like to change, then match the composite shade to your natural teeth. For most bonding, there's little or no need to prepare the tooth. We build the resin up in thin layers, hardening each one with a curing light, then shape and polish it until it blends in and feels right when you bite together. For a single tooth this might take well under an hour; a full smile is usually one longer appointment.
Will it hurt?
Most patients find it comfortable, and many don't need any anaesthetic at all. That said, everyone's experience is a little different, and if a tooth needs some light preparation you may notice mild sensitivity afterwards for a day or two. If anything feels more than mild or doesn't settle, please let us know..
How long does it last?
On average, around 5 to 7 years, though this genuinely depends on you. What you eat and drink, whether you grind your teeth at night, and how well it's looked after all make a difference. We say this honestly because we don't want to promise a lifespan we can't guarantee for every patient. Some bonding lasts longer, some needs attention sooner.
What are the downsides, honestly?
It's less durable than porcelain veneers, it can stain over time, and it's more vulnerable to chipping than your natural enamel, especially if you grind your teeth. It's also not the right tool for correcting genuine misalignment. That's an orthodontic problem, not a bonding one. We'd rather tell you this upfront than have you find out later that bonding wasn't the right fit for what you actually needed.
Is it reversible?
In most cases, yes, because we're adding material rather than removing it. If any light preparation of the tooth surface is needed for your treatment, we'll explain this to you before we begin.. It's not something we'd want to leave you assuming either way.
Can it be repaired rather than replaced?
Often, yes. That's one of the genuine advantages of bonding over veneers. A small chip can usually be built back up in a short appointment rather than redoing the whole tooth.
Can it damage my teeth?
Edge bonding is additive. We're not taking anything away. Full-coverage bonding occasionally needs very light surface preparation, and if that applies to you, we'll explain exactly what and why before we go ahead.
Is it safe?
Yes, when carried out by a registered dentist using standard, well-established dental materials. As with any treatment, suitability depends on your individual teeth and history, which is exactly what the consultation is for.
What should I avoid afterwards?
For the first day or two, we'd suggest steering clear of very staining foods and drinks such as red wine, coffee, tea and curry, and anything very hard or sticky that could chip the new surface before it's fully settled in your bite.
Can I whiten my teeth afterwards?
Not really. Composite doesn't lighten with whitening treatments the way your natural enamel does. If whitening is something you're considering, it's better done before bonding, so we can match the composite to your final, lighter shade.
Am I a good candidate?
Bonding works well for minor chips, small gaps, slight unevenness, and mild discolouration. It's not the right answer for significant misalignment, major structural damage, or teeth with untreated decay or gum disease. Those need addressing first, and sometimes need a different treatment altogether. We'll always tell you honestly if we think bonding isn't the best option for what you're trying to achieve.
Bonding or veneers, which should I choose?
There's no single right answer. It depends on what matters most to you. Bonding is quicker, less expensive, and reversible, but doesn't last as long. Veneers cost more and involve some tooth preparation, but tend to hold their appearance for longer. We're happy to talk through the trade-offs for your specific teeth rather than push one over the other.
